In this post, we will discuss 7 lawn care tips for the month of March in the Houston area to help keep your lawn healthy in spring.

We are lucky in the Houston area that our spring starts earlier than in other parts of the country. No snow for us!

In the Houston area, we can even start getting our yards ready and our lawn care in place in February.

If you did not begin working in February, now is the time to get caught up on your February lawn care tips in Houston.

7  Tips To Prepare Your Houston Lawn For Spring

  • Test your sprinkler system
  • Apply a slow-release fertilizer to your lawn
  • Apply your tree and shrub fertilizer
  • Mulch your flower beds
  • Plant annual flowers
  • Apply insecticide
  • Mow weekly to 3 inches high

1. Test your sprinkler system

If it has been a while since your testing your lawn’s sprinkler system, now is the time to do so.

Check for any broken heads and make sure the water pressure is where it should be.

Checking in March should still give you plenty of time to fix any issues before the harsh summer sun hits.

Apply a slow-release fertilizer to help promote lawn growth. This is included in your annual lawn care program with Green Bee.

This is also an effective weed control because your healthy grass helps crowd out weeds.

3. Apply your tree and shrub fertilizer

March is a great time to give your trees and shrubs a fertilizer so they will thrive throughout the summer.

4. Mulch your flower beds

Rake your flower bed mulch and add fresh mulch to your beds.

The stores should be filling with annual flowers that you can now begin buying and planting in your flower beds.

6. Apply insecticide

We recommend applying an insecticide in March and will include it with your annual lawn care program with Green Bee.

7. Mow weekly to 3 inches high

In the month of March in Houston, the best height to mow your lawn is 3 inches in height. If you let your grass grow too high, it can create a thatch that can be susceptible to lawn fungus.
